Amazon unveiled a new free game engine Lumberyard

9 February, Amazon introduced and laid out in open access beta version of their 3D engine Lumberyard. Promise that it has deep integration with Amazon Web Services and streaming video service Twitch (also owned by Amazon). The engine is free for developers, its source code is open and available for download. Lumberyard is based on the code of the engine CryEngine, language writing games in C++. While it is possible to create cross-platform apps for the PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in the near future, announced support for iOS and Android devices. To earn it, the company wants to help developers to use AWS services: when you create a network of games developers can use their own servers, but when necessary use third-party servers, they have to be the Amazon servers.

Claimed capabilities:

Graphics shaders, physics-based, dynamic global illumination, the editor of particle systems, a tool for creating plants, water caustics real-time volumetric fog effects: color grading, motion blur, depth of field, HDR, lens flares and others.

characters: tool Gepetto superstructure Mannequin to create a skeletal animation. Supported ragdoll physics, animation layers, trees mixing.

networking subsystem GridMate that optimizes the use of bandwidth and lower latencies.

Sound - free version of the sound engine Wwise LTX

Modular gems: library of 16 built-in gems easier working with natural effects (rain, snow, tornadoes, lightning), multiplayer, camera and UI.

Archive Lumberyard for installation in Windows (Mac and Linux seem to have no versions) is heavy, weighs about 10 GB, plus you can download three resource pack: Woodland Asset Package (to create the forest, 1.5 GB), Beach City Asset Package (characters, objects, and props to the coastal town in the style of the 1950s with zombie motifs, 4.8 GB) and almost finished the engine first-person shooter, ported from CryEngine GameSDK (Legacy Game Sample, 3.5 GB).

Amazon recommended computer configuration for working with the Lumberyard: Windows 7 64-bit, 8+ GB RAM, 60 GB hard drive, Quad core processor, 3 GHz+ and graphics card with 2+ GB with support for DX11 and above.
