Please don't waste your time reading bad books! And balance-balance-balance...

here's the deal – I'm not going to build itself from the GTD gurus and so-forth. I'm just a fan of irons that gets a rush from writing of articles on Habr/Victims (unfortunately, the number of comments on Victims very small, but the return of Megamind here again lets hope for normal communication).

Now, I'm not a guru and not a coach. However, in my over 35 years, I realized one simple thing – you should not read bad books. This stunning new conclusion follows from a simple mathematical calculation:

Let's say you are 30 years (I write 30 because by this time usually already have children, work, Hobbies and so-forth). If you less – do not worry, everything is changing rapidly and has little effect on further calculations :)

My own stats, plus interviews of friends and acquaintances, plus nationwide statistics suggests that on average we read, no more than 10-12 books per year. Now then, average life expectancy in Russia is 71 years old. Thus, if you are 30, you have to read all 41*11=450 books. Just think about it, 450 books! Given that the standing of the books written by mankind much more (the difference is by orders of magnitude), you should very carefully refers to the selection of current fiction. If you still think that 450 is a lot, read to the end, I give some references to the ratings, which swoop eats 50% percent of this amount.

Digression: a few years ago I read that the Chinese read on average 6 books a year (link not find it, but it was Russian Reporter). I this number was somewhat surprised, because I myself have somewhat less. By the time my first child was born, dramatically increased the workload and so on and so forth. Thoughtful analysis itself showed that the attempt to read on a smartphone/tablet is doomed to failure – always something distracting, the same Habr, for example. So I uncovered an old paperback book, and then read the number has doubled. Then, consciously, I chose Kindle, increasing the number of reading by 10 percent just due to the convenience of the automatic throwing their books into Kindle via Dropbox. Last year, during the holidays, I managed to leave the reader on the bench and never saw him again. The transition on the screen again showed a decline read somewhere twice. The emergence of a new Kindle returned all returned to normal.

But back to our 450 books (substitute here the value). Framed? Now safely divide the resulting value by 2. Why?

In 2010, I came across about an amazing idea: a Chinese Denis Oh invented bookshelf The Balance of Your Knowledge! The idea is based on the principle of balance: the regiment is mounted on the middle and can tilt under the weight of books to the right or to the left. One of the parties refers to the professional literature, the second to art. And as soon as any "bowl" will begin to outweigh the urgent need to buy a counterweight.

The idea I liked it so much that all these years I try to alternate fiction and professional books in its virtual library. The approach is justified because art books easy to swallow, and professional recurring stupor. Thus, the desire to read something light, makes faster to deal with complex read. Well, it is possible to achieve any kind of balance in development.

In General, by the way, strange thing. The most useful books on life was just non-fiction – they have a strong influence on everyday life and they lead to the qualitative changes. Well, fiction was the most productive, in the sense that the understanding of cultural references brings the greatest pleasure of reading in the future. Ie the more you read and the more you've read, the greater the pleasure in the future. Funny thing number 2 – there is such an amazing series Michael the assumption about Ihara. The pleasure of reading depends on knowledge. Reading 10 years ago and reading it now is radically different. This is, pardon the comparison, like to reread the Master and Margarita – in the childhood was cool Behemoth, and now Citywest in monologues Yeshua.
By the way, in the above mentioned 450 books is also a re-reading. Because some of the books you stupidly did not understand at an earlier age.

And now, as promised above, let's just score yourself a reading list for the next few years :)

the Art of the book. Let's start with fiction:
At the time I was pokusa brilliant in its simplicity a post on D3. The author has brought together all the nominees in the main fantastic literary competitions (Hugo, nebula and Locus), and then received a list of books, quote "scored 6 to 9 points (that is, the winners at least two awards, "the Golden Fund of science fiction," so to speak)". Not to say that I love everything about it, but most are very, very steep. Given that the post was written in 2011, ctive for the last five years can be calculated independently.

total +14 books.

fiction
Some time ago a Billboard went mega cool design 100 best novels of the century. This book written in the last 15 years, each of which in its interesting and important. At the moment I read ten books from this list, and they were all good.
total +100 books

Plus, jellyfish are regularly go book reviews Galina Yuzefovich. There is always POPs up something interesting.

Educational/professional:
I'm not going to write about a highly specialized literature (each of us own it). But there are a number of books the reading of which is absolutely necessary for the overall development. Most interesting is that their list has been made a companion Milfgard. You can start with a relatively recent post, and then move on a link to the past.

PS: I understand that everyone has a way to find interesting books. My links – this is just one of the ways to find something interesting. The most important thing I wanted to say – please, do not waste time on nonsense. It, time, very, very little, and nonsense is very, very much.

P. P. S.: with the new division into megababy I can't choose a more suitable place for accommodation. Have in GTD, as the closest. I would be grateful if corrected.
