Blekko: search engine with Kastelli (categories)

Finally launched for public beta test of the original search engine Blekko developed under the leadership of Richard Skrenta (Rich Skrenta).

Richard Skrenta gained notoriety in hacker circles in 1982, when he wrote virus Elk Cloner, considered the first mass virus for personal computers (back then it was Apple II). The talented player was only 15 years old, he went to school.

In the late 80s and 90s Skrenta worked in companies Amiga Unix (Commodore Business Machines), Unix System Labs and Sun Microsystems (developed encryption at IP level). Later he was one of the founders of the open directory Open Directory Project, bought soon by Netscape. Then he resigned and founded the news aggregator Topix, which, in 2005, also successfully sold one of the American publishing consortium.

Search engine Blekko — his new startup, created with the assistance of investment capital former colleague Marc Andreessen (author of the Mosaic browser and cofounder of Netscape). In General, judging by the background, the promising project.

As with all past projects Skrenta, search engine, Blekko also has a "geek" plaque. The main feature is a refinement of a search query by using slastikov. And clarifying lestage are available already at the stage of autocomplete. Very convenient and intuitive feature.

It is noticeable that this system was clearly influenced by the above-mentioned Open Directory Project. Everything is very structured, each slashtag (i.e. thematic categories) is your editor and any registered user can create new slashtag to include sites from the search index. It is something like "personal thematic search engine", which can be made open to all or to stay closed.

Now it created several hundred thematic klasterov. Besides them, there are built in lestage. Here are some examples.

the
    the
  • /people — restrictions on the issuance on the personal pages
  • the
  • /date: sort results by date
  • the
  • /blogs /forums — search for blogs or forums
  • the
  • /rank — shows the ranking results (rank) for each page
  • the
  • /dr=2005-2006 — search through pages, dated 2005 and 2006
  • the
  • /noporn — filter results with "adult" sites"
  • the
  • /map
  • the
  • /stock
  • the
  • /traffic
  • the
  • /weather

Lestage add new features in a traditional search. For example, you can enter [bp /liberal] or [bp /conservative] and read about the company BP with different political points of view. In more detail the concept of slastikov is explained in the video.
